Houston Airports and Southwest Airlines have officially commenced the expansion of the West Concourse at William P. Hobby Airport. This significant project, valued at $470 million, aims to enhance the airport’s facilities and accommodate increasing passenger volumes. The expansion includes the addition of seven new gates for domestic and international flights, advanced baggage claim facilities, and a protective canopy along the departures curb that will protect against inclement weather and connect the Red Garage to the terminal. The project is slated for completion in the summer of 2027, according to a news release by Houston Airports.
The expansion responds to the growing demand at Hobby Airport, which served nearly 1.3 million passengers in the first half of 2023, according to Houston Airport statistics. This development marks the first major building expansion since 2015, when Southwest Airlines opened a 280,000-square-foot West Concourse. “Passengers will spend less time waiting for luggage and more time enjoying what Houston has to offer,” said Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports.
The enhanced facilities aim to provide a world-class travel experience, aligning with Hobby Airport’s status as North America’s first and only 5-Star Skytrax airport. “As North America’s first and only 5-Star Skytrax airport, it’s essential for Hobby Airport to offer facilities and services that match our world-class reputation. Partnering with Southwest Airlines on this project allows us to create a truly remarkable experience for all travelers.” said Szczesniak.
The project is funded through a combination of approved funds, including $20 million for planning and design and $250 million for construction, with an additional $200 million authorization pending, according to the Houston Airports news released in August 2023. The expansion is not just about adding more gates; it focuses on enhancing every aspect of the passenger experience, including more space for restaurants, retail, and art.
The project also underscores the strong partnership between Houston Airports and Southwest Airlines, which has been a cornerstone of the Houston community since 1971. “This expansion reflects our shared commitment to investing in Houston’s future and enhancing the traveler experience at Hobby Airport,” said Sherri Hull, Director of Governmental Affairs for Southwest Airlines.
For local businesses and property owners, this expansion presents numerous opportunities. The increase in passenger traffic is expected to stimulate economic growth in the area, potentially boosting local commerce, hospitality, and real estate markets.
Property owners may see increased demand for commercial spaces, and local businesses could benefit from the influx of travelers seeking services and amenities. This development represents a commitment to investing in Houston’s future and enhancing the traveler experience at Hobby Airport.
