In the Hobby Area, Joe Anderson is known for more than just his successful Chick-fil-A restaurant. He’s an entrepreneur who’s deeply committed to his community, using his business as a platform to make a real difference. From his humble beginnings to where he is now, Joe’s story is about hard work, learning from setbacks, and lifting others up.
From Track and Field to Business
Joe didn’t always know he wanted to run a restaurant. Growing up in Houston’s South Side, he was focused on track and field, dreaming of becoming a professional athlete. “I thought I was going to be a coach and a teacher,” Joe explains. But as he got further into college at Sam Houston State University, he started noticing that his interests were shifting. “I was always talking about business and marketing, and one of my teammates said, ‘You’d be really good at that.’ That’s when I started thinking, ‘Okay, maybe I can do something in business.’
Joe ended up double-majoring in marketing and management and landed internships to learn the ropes of the business world. His time interning at a Hotel in Dallas really solidified his love for hospitality. “I liked the idea of making people’s day better by giving them a great experience,” he recalls. Joe’s passion for the restaurant industry grew as he worked with McDonald’s, but it was a brief experience at Chick-fil-A that really caught his attention.
A Turning Point at Chick-fil-A
In 2012, Joe took a chance and joined Chick-fil-A, a decision that changed his career. “I spent a few weeks working at a Chick-fil-A in Stafford, Texas, and the leadership there really spoke to me,” he says. “Roy Valley, the operator, was someone who really took the time to invest in me. His leadership was authentic, and he made me feel like I could do this.” Joe worked under Roy’s mentorship for several years and eventually helped open a second location.
Joe also spent time on the corporate side, learning more about the business and the company’s values. “In 2016, I lost my father, and that was a turning point for me,” he reflects. “That experience made me realize that business and life aren’t separate. You have to learn how to lead through tough times, and that’s something I’ve carried with me since then.”
Building His Chick-fil-A in the Hobby Area
Joe’s big break came when he opened his own Chick-fil-A in the Hobby Area in 2018. “This is my hometown,” he says with pride. “I grew up in this area, and when I saw the potential for this location, I knew I had to be part of it.”
For Joe, running a business isn’t just about profits; it’s about serving others. He’s made customer service and hospitality the cornerstone of his entrepreneurial journey, believing that offering an exceptional experience goes beyond just providing food. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve my community every day,” he says. “It’s not just about running a business; it’s about making an impact that lasts long after the business hours are over.”
Giving Back to the Community
Whether it’s donating food for local events, organizing fundraisers, or participating in school programs, Joe’s Chick-fil-A is a local hub for connection. One of his proudest projects is his work with the South Houston High School Leadership Academy. “I love being able to talk to young people about leadership and share my journey with them,” Joe says. “Leadership isn’t just about giving orders—it’s about inspiring others, showing empathy, and setting a good example.”
Joe’s commitment to community involvement extends to his work with local organizations, including food pantries and the Hobby Area district’s turkey drives. “When I look at the community around me, I feel like it’s my responsibility to give back,” he says. “The more we give, the more we can make a positive impact.”

Joe’s work is far from done. As he continues to grow his business and expand his influence in the Hobby Area, he remains focused on making a difference, not just in his restaurant, but in the lives of those around him. “I want people to know they have options,” Joe says. “There’s not just one way to succeed. If you stay focused and work hard, there are always opportunities.”
