Ideas Pitch Competition
By Germaine Washington, MBA
OCOM had the pleasure of interviewing scholarship recipient winners for the Ideas Pitch Competition. These Houston Community College (HCC) students presented innovative ideas that help people. The opportunity to hear about their wonderful ideas coincide perfectly with the beginning of the academic school year for HCC. This episode featured students Luisa Nadarajah, Mac Woods, and Joe Carpenter. The show also featured Ravi Brahmbhatt, Director, Center for Entrepreneurship at Southwest and competition manager. The Ideas Pitch Competition focuses on our students pitching their unique and creative ideas. Each participant must not only present their business idea but the ideas have to be inclusive towards helping the community. The competition is typically presented in person but due to the pandemic, the HCC team and participants pivoted to offering it virtually.
Luisa Nadarajah was my first guest featured on the show and she is a talented fashion designer. She is also an HCC student under the Fashion department. The COVID-19 pandemic allowed her to come up with an idea to help people stay safe and look good at the same time. Luisa’s idea was to create a stylish mask that can be worn multiple ways. In addition, the mask can be washed and reused with the ability to change the filter inside. The masks are made of Peruvian fabric and can be worn as a headband, placed around hats for an added flair and hangs around the neck so you won’t lose it. The masks can be purchased on her website at along with her other fashion designs.
Our second guest was a wonderful HCC student, Mac Woods. She is an “empty-nester” who has taken her new life goals to the next level. Mac realized that her current home was too large after her grown children moved out on their own. She came up with an idea where people can have smaller but luxurious smart homes to downsize but still have all the amenities that come with homeownership. Mac calls her home idea “Petite Homes” and she wants to move in one herself. Mac is also an aspiring fashion designer and will be debuting her fashion line soon for women over 50 years of age. She is a student in the construction management department and loves her HCC professors. Mac was very enthusiastic about her participation in the HCC Ideas Pitch Competition. She discussed how due to the pandemic, it forced her to improve her technological skills. She said that because the competition was virtual it gave her an opportunity to ensure her computer skills were excellent. She talked about her plans to launch the her Petite Homes idea next year, as well as her new fashion line.
Our final guest was Mr. Joe Carpenter, who developed a company to help bring employers and employees together. Due to the global pandemic, he realized that many meetings, transactions, and other tasks can be done online. His company allows unemployed people who may have lost their jobs due to the pandemic, an opportunity to post their skills online for potential employment. He also ensures that potential workers or contractors have all of the resources setup for them to be paid and to showcase their business. For more details, Joe can be contacted at [email protected] to find out more information.
Ravi Brahmbhatt, Director, Center for Entrepreneurship, Southwest College discussed the origins of the Ideas Pitch Competition and how you can enter the next competition. You can find all of the information about the Pitch competition at: This is a great resource and opportunity for our students and also of great help to the community. You can still check out the show on HCC-TV on Friday nights at 7 p.m., or you can see the video recording on our website at anytime.
