Businesses around the Hobby Area District are about to get more colorful as artwork created by students at YES Prep Hobby goes public.
Mariah Bustillos created a poster with a fruit motif and Vivianne Ruiz designed a poster highlighting iconic Houston signs and sites, like the Houston Livestock Show Rodeo, Space Center Houston and the “Be Someone” graffiti.
The students produced the artwork in coordination with the Hobby Area District with the theme, “Eat Local, Shop Local” to support businesses in the Hobby Area.
Their artwork will be on display in local businesses including the DoubleTree by Hilton Hobby Airport, the Marriott Hobby Hotel and other locations.
“I think it’s an exciting program and the students did an impressive job of creating art for us to put up,” said Helen Perrone Bonsall, general manager of the DoubleTree by Hilton Houston Hobby Airport. “The premise is to highlight local area businesses, so we’re happy to display their work.”
The art is being reproduced as 8×11’’ mini-pieces at a local printing company so it can be distributed to grace the windows and walls of Hobby Area businesses. Those pieces are made of heavier card stock and will soon be available free to the businesses.
It’s part of a new and exciting partnership between the District and the school, since YES Prep Hobby just opened its doors to students and families in August 2019.
“As a new school in the community, I am proud of the relationships that we have been able to build over the last few years in service of our students and their families,” said Principal Chase Sander. “One of the relationships we are proud of is the relationship with the Hobby Area District who has supported us in our efforts to increase the number of high-quality, college-preparatory seats in the community.”
He said staff at the school works diligently to build a culture of high academic expectations from their students. The students in the class of 2026 are laying the foundation for future students at YES Prep Hobby, he noted.
YES Prep Hobby serves students in 6th – 8th grade and is looking forward to opening the doors to a high school in August 2022.
“We will eventually serve students in 6th through12th grade as we will continue to add one grade level per year until we are fully grown out,” Sander said.

A 2022-2023 lottery for student enrollment will open on Oct. 29 for families to apply for the next school year. The school is seeking applicants for 6th grade this school year and families can at https://yesprep.schoolmint.
