In memory of Jose “Joe” Campos Torres, the City of Houston has announced the dedication of a still-under-construction site, as the future Joe Campos Torres Plaza, and the Joe Campos Torres Trail along Buffalo Bayou at the Austin Street Trailhead in downtown Houston. The plaza dedication will be a historic moment in which the City of Houston acknowledges and reflects on a painful moment in our city’s history.
I want to invite the community to attend the dedication and naming ceremony on Saturday, April 2, 2022, beginning at 1 p.m. The plaza is located at 1301 Commerce Street. Complimentary parking will be provided at the garage located at 1401 Congress Street.

The Oates Road rehabilitation project in the northeast of District I is now underway! We remind drivers to reduce speed, travel slowly, and be mindful of work crews during construction. The project provides for major work including road milling, base repairs, and improving the shoulders. This type of work is never easy, and minor disruptions and inconveniences are to be expected, but our office will monitor the progress and communicate regularly with Houston Public Works and the contractor to minimize impacts to the neighborhood and businesses.
In addition to Oates, the City of Houston is preparing to reconstruct the Wynnewood Acres area to improve stormwater drainage, pavement conditions, and reduce structural flooding in the neighborhood. The project is set to begin in spring 2022.

A reminder for residents in Magnolia Park: Houston Public Works will be resurfacing 65th St., 66th., and Cesar Chavez Blvd., between Canal and Harrisburg, as well as Ave. F., Brady St., Ave. E., Sherman St., Ave. C, Ave. B between Wayside and Oldham St. Street resurfacing is conducted in two phases: 1. Removal (milling) old asphalt 2. Placing new asphalt. An overlay is not designed to improve or correct drainage issues; it is used to preserve and prolong the life of the road base and provide a smoother riding surface. Residents are asked to avoid parking vehicles on the street during work hours, Monday – Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you have any comments or questions regarding the work, please call Houston Public Works at 713-843-5483.

Recycling right is just as important as recycling more. Contamination harms the program by making it hard to recover clean recyclables at the sorting center. To help protect the curbside recycling program, remember to keep it clean, and when in doubt, throw it out. Most recyclables are packaging items from products found in the kitchen, bath and laundry of your home. All recycling items must be empty and clean before placing in the recycling bin. Place items loose into the cart – do not bag recycling.

If you know of a young person between 16-24 years old who will be looking for a job this summer, please have them apply for the Cty’s Summer Jobs Program! Positions are for 32 hours per week and pay $10 per hour. The application period ends on April 8, 2022.
To be eligible to participate in the program, you must be between the age of 16 and 24 by June 13th. Successful candidates will be required to pass a drug test and a background check, and either submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination or report COVID test results on the 1st and 15th of the month.

We continue to urge residents to help us report stopped trains and blocked crossings to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) as well as to Union Pacific (UP) Railroad. Our office has created a quick reference sheet with reporting information for a few of our most problematic crossings: Lawndale, S. Lockwood, Telephone, and Lawndale/Griggs.
Please file complaints each time you encounter blocked crossings so that federal regulators know how widespread and problematic this has become.
