15 Reasons to be Excited for HobbyFest 2019

Categories: Community,Events

Houston gets its once-a-year backstage pass to a part of William P. Hobby Airport that’s usually inaccessible to the public at the 27th annual HobbyFest on April 20th. Hobby-area families can spend the day exploring activities on the tarmac as well as in multiple private hangars, courtesy of our generous event sponsor Signature Flight Support. Here are fifteen things to look forward to at this year’s event:

  • Free food. The first 1,000 attendees will be treated to a free lunch, served by multiple food truck vendors. After the initial complimentary food is distributed, food will be available for purchase on site—please have your cash and credit cards on deck.
  • Planes. Lots of ‘em. The whole family can touch and admire vintage, contemporary and military static aircraft displays in an up-close-and-personal educational experience.
  • Pictures with the Easter Bunny. What’s Easter Weekend without Peter Cottontail? The Easter Bunny will be available for pictures and to hand out Easter eggs to all children, while they last.
  • Giveaways and raffle prizes. Purchase tickets to win any of the 50+ raffle items donated by event sponsors, including items like travel vouchers, VR headsets, pet supplies, gift cards and more. Kids will also receive free goodie bags.
  • Awesome local food trucks. In addition to funnel cakes and snow cones, enjoy delicious menu offerings from The Bearded-Q & Southern Sliders Co. food trucks.
  • Kid Zone with inflatables, rides and fun activities. Kids can enjoy a special hangar packed with face painting, bungee trampoline, princess makeovers sponsored by MAC (girls 12 and under), a bouncy house and slide, a rockwall and more.
  • Scout badge earning opportunities. Kids can join the 50+ Scouts (boys and girls) earning their Aviation, Crime Prevention, Fire Prevention, Fire Safety, and Emergency Preparedness merit badges at HobbyFest.
  • Black Panther, Wonder Woman and Buzz Lightyear. From Wakanda to infinity, and beyond, these characters will please Marvel and Disney/Pixar fans of all ages.
  • Meet the HAD staff, board members and event volunteers. We love getting to meet members of the community. Please come say hi and let us know what you think of the event!
  • Browse our vendor booths. Shop products and interact with local businesses and organizations to learn more about what services they provide in the Hobby area.
  • Give back to the local community. This annual event is free to the public with the donation of a non-perishable food item or infant essentials like diapers, baby shampoo, formula, wipes and toiletries to be distributed to community members in need of assistance through the Hobby Area Rotary Club.
  • Wear vintage clothes to match the airplanes. In past years, we’ve been joined by Ms. Houston Vintage and others who dress in vintage attire as a nod to the vintage planes on display at HobbyFest.
  • Live musical entertainment and dance floor. Mango Punch Band will have the crowd jamming with a live bilingual performance and the DJ will keep your energy up all afternoon. Don’t miss your chance to bust a move on the dance floor with the Hobby Area District board members and staff.
  • HobbyFest is on—rain or shine! After hosting this event for 27 years, we’ve got it down to a science. Regardless of the weather, HobbyFest guests can come out for a great experience.
  • Scholarship announcement. Proceeds from event sponsorships go towards the Allen T. Johnson Memorial Scholarship which benefits local students through funds applied to their studies in aviation, public affairs and transportation-related fields. Students will be awarded scholarship checks by the HAD scholarship committee and local City of Houston representatives.
