Get In The Back To School Groove With These Houston-Area Events

It’s back to school time, and there are plenty of resources to help busy families check multiple items of their to-do lists. Here’s a sampling of upcoming events where you can receive school supplies, health and hygiene services, vaccinations, groceries and other cool giveaways free of charge.

Mayor’s Back 2 School Fest
August 11
This year the mayor’s Back to School Fest presented by Shell will provide backpacks, school supplies, health screenings, immunizations, and social service resources to thousands of students, free of charge. Due to limited space and supplies, you must pre-register to attend this event.

Pasadena Back to School Health Fair
August 11 from 9AM to noon
Come out to the Strawberry Park Track (1104 Parkside Dr. Pasadena, Texas 77502) and enjoy fun activities for children, free backpacks & school supplies, grocery distribution by Houston Food Bank, and free immunizations for children 4-18 years old (please bring shot records).

HPD Back to School Drive
August 17 from noon to 3PM
Meet the Houston Police Department Southeast Community Service Division and pick up free school supplies at HPD Broadway storefront (8751 Broadway St., Houston, TX 77061). School-aged children must be present to receive school supplies. Call 832-394-7585 with questions.

Morales Memorial Foundation 21st Annual Back to School Give Away
August 18 from 8 to 10AM
Join the Morales Funeral Home and Christus St. Mary’s Clinic for free school supplies, immunizations, sports physicals, dental screenings, CHIP application assistance, nutrition education, zumba fitness class and a raffle with prizes including a bicycle and laptop! Event will be held at 2901 Canal Street, Houston, Texas 77003.

Lewis Elementary Back to School Event
August 22 from 9AM to 1PM
Don’t miss free haircuts, school supplies, immunizations and health services in addition to refreshments and bouncy house activities. Children are eligible to receive vaccines through Lewis Elementary’s program if they have no insurance, have insurance that does not cover vaccines, or have Medicaid. Vaccines are limited by supply, staffing and time. Please bring all vaccine records with you. Event will take place at 6745 Tipperary Ln, Houston, TX 77061.

Back-To-School Immunization Extravaganza
Aug. 24 from 4 to 6:30PM
The Houston Fire Department and the Care Van Program are teaming up to provide free immunizations at their annual Back-To-School Immunization Extravaganza at HFD Val Jahnke Training Facility (8030 Braniff, Houston, Texas 77061). The free immunizations are only available for uninsured or Medicaid children ages 4 to 18 years. Parents must accompany their children and provide their most current immunization records. Free Vaccinations at Children’s Museum of Houston
Aug. 9, 16, 23 & 30 from 5 to 7PM
Committed to creating a community of healthy children, Texas Children’s Mobile Clinic Program will administer free immunizations to the first 150-children to arrive on each date. To qualify, parents and guardians will need their child’s immunization records. Call 832-824-6780 for more info.

Cuts for Kids by Remington College 
Month of August
Step into the school year with confidence—and a fresh cut. Kids age 17 or younger are eligible for free haircuts at Remington College Greenspoint Campus (11310 Greens Crossing Blvd., Houston, TX 77067). Call 281-885-4490 to schedule an appointment.
