Keyur Amin, Hobby Area District Board Member

Categories: Community

We’re proud of the diverse experiences and backgrounds of our board members, because we know how important representation is for our business owners and Hobby Area residents. This month we want people to get to know more about Keyur Amin, who runs his family-owned Gateway Ace Hardware store and is working hard in his first year as a board member to support local business owners and the community through his service.

Tell us a little about your background. Where did you grow up, and what do you do for a living?
I immigrated to the U.S. from India in 1986 at the age of 21. I went to San Jacinto College South, where I studied Computer Science. In addition to Houston, I have lived and worked in Indianapolis, Kentucky and Michigan. Houston is my favorite city! My wife Priya and I have owned Gateway Ace Hardware since 2010. I manage the store. Our two boys, Rishi and Vishaal, both graduated from the University of Houston and helped at the Gateway ACE store—as helpful hardware men!

What does Hobby District mean to you, and what makes it unique?
The Hobby District is unique due to its rich history, location (close to 45, 610, and Beltway 8), and diverse demographics. It also has a good residential, commercial, and industrial mix that will provide future economic growth.

Why did you decide to become a Board Member?
My business is a community hardware store. We are part of the neighborhood and we support the community we serve. I decided to become a Board Member to increase awareness of Hobby Area District’s role to other business owners. I also wanted to establish a network of local business owners to support the community and each other. By networking, we can attract new businesses, help fuel economic growth, and also make the area more desirable to live.

What are your priorities in your first year serving?
Reaching out to other business owners and spreading awareness of current and future plans of Hobby Area District, and to create networking opportunities for local businesses.

When you’re not serving the District, what do you do in your free time?
Most days are spent at the store. However, I manage to find time to enjoy traveling and golfing.

What do you wish more people knew about the Hobby District?
I wish more people knew how diverse the district is and the opportunities it offers.

What inspires you?
Opportunities and innovations inspire me.

What are your hopes for the community?
I hope to see new businesses migrating into our community. I also hope to see better infrastructure, schools, and expanding businesses.
