The Texas Legislature has always looked to the City to develop a pension reform plan for our three employee pension systems (police, fire and municipal employees). On October 26, Mayor Turner and City Council achieved the goal for mutually agreed upon pension reforms that will allow the City to meet pension obligations without raising taxes, additional debt, or impacting current retirees. No retiree check will be decreased as a result of this plan.
This is the first time in 15 years that all 3 pension systems stand united on reform. It is now up to the Legislature to approve this agreement in the upcoming session. I offer my sincerest congratulations to Mayor Sylvester Turner and this Council for addressing this critically important financial matter in such an expedient and respectful manner.
