Allen T. Johnson Memorial Scholarship

The Allen T. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Committee invites you to submit a project or original artwork to be presented at HobbyFest 2017, to be held at William P. Hobby Airport on April 15, 2017. You are invited to submit a project or original artwork on any air transportation and related topics including Management, Marketing, Geography, Operations, Noise Control, Planning and Customer Service.

Suggested topic areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Air Traffic Control
  • Air Transport Demand
  • Airport and Airline Performance
  • Airport Economics
  • Airport Strategy, Management and Operations
  • Air Transportation Policy and Regulations
  • Aviation and Tourism
  • Aviation Safety and Security
  • Environmental Issues in Air Transport Industry
  • Inter-Modal and Air Travel Alternatives
  • Marketing in Air Transportations
  • Future Developments of Air Transportation
  • Transportation and Mobility
  • Emergency Management and Homeland Security
  • Logistics and Warehousing
  • Public Transit Infrastructure
  • Airport and Airline Social Outreach
  • Airport Concessions (Retail, Restaurants and Services)

The Allen T. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Committee will be offering up to $15,000 in scholarships for 2017. Scholarships will range from $500 – $5,000 and the award amount will be determined by a panel of judges selected by the Scholarship Committee on the merits of the individual applicant’s presentation.

Submission Process/Deadlines

Students applying for an Allen T. Johnson Memorial Scholarships need to submit an application and abstract to the Scholarship Committee no later than March 24, 2017. The Scholarship Committee will approve the abstracts by March 29, 2017. The final project should include a paper of no more than 20 pages and a power point presentation or a “display ready” original art piece. The deadline for final project submission is April 7, 2017.

Students selected for a scholarship award will be asked to present their project to the Scholarship Committee on April 14, 2017. Scholarships will be formally announced and awarded at HobbyFest on April 15, 2017.

Abstract and Project Format

  • Title of your paper
  • Your Name
  • School, Major and anticipated graduation date
  • Address, phone number and email address

Abstract: Text of your abstract should be in 1.5 line spaces in 12 Times New Roman font. Your abstract should be 150-300 words, and should include purpose of the paper; methodology; anticipated results or contributions to literature, industry or society.
Abstracts must contain enough information for the committee to evaluate your contributions (theoretical, methodological, and/or empirical).

Paper Format: Text should be in 1.5 line space and in 12 Times New Roman font. Papers should be no more than 20 pages in length (excluding citations). Citations should follow the MLA citation style.

PowerPoint Presentation: PowerPoint presentations need to be submitted in a .pptx or .ppt format. If the presentation contains video, the video must be embedded for easy viewing.

Art Submissions: Art submissions follow the same deadline and criteria as projects. Abstracts can either be a written explanation of the project or a combination of written and images. Art work submissions need to presented in a professional manner and “ready to display”. Art submissions are limited to the following disciplines and must meet the subject matter previously listed:

  • Ceramics
  • Sculpture
  • Drawing – Matted and framed.
  • Graphic Design – Flush mounted to matte board or foam core.
  • Illustration – Matted and framed.
  • Painting – Framed.
  • Printmaking – Matted or floated.
  • Photography – Matted and framed.

*Please note, any art scholarship submissions become the property of the Hobby Management District and the William P. Hobby International Airport. Students agree to allow their submissions to be placed on display at the discretion of the Hobby Management District and/or William P. Hobby management.
